Designer Clothes

Designer clothes are a highly desirable, creative and often unique collection of clothes which bear the name or logo of a well known designer. Examples of designer clothes include Dolce and Gabbana, Gucci and Ralph Lauren. They come with an expensive price tag and can often be off the wall creations which show off the designer's creative vision and skills but are impractical for everyday wear. The versions seen on many catwalk shows are frequently diluted for the high street.

People purchase designer clothing for a variety of reasons: these include the desire to look different from everyone else, the buying in to a certain lifestyle and aspirations, the need to make a fashion statement and, the adoption of and presentation of an identity that the wearer is confident with. A less desirable aspect of this is that it can confer a sense of superiority on the part of the wearer who sees themselves as part of an elite. This is especially prevalent amongst children and teenagers who are at that stage in their lives where having the right clothes and belonging to the right group is of major importance. Whereas this is not a problem for the more affluent teenagers, for those who are unable to afford the latest labels, it can lead to a sense of being stigmatised and alienation.
